Also known as calcium phosphate tribasic and precipitated calcium (or monobasic) phosphate.
A white, odorless, tasteless very small particle size powder that is stable in air, insoluble in alchohol and very slightly soluble in water. It is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries (e.g. a mineral supplement, conditioning agent) and as a free flowing (anticaking) agent for powdered foods.
In ceramics it is used as a substitute for bone ash in glazes and bodies since its chemistry is similar.
Theoretical formula is 54.2 CaO, 45.7 P2O5. However brand name materials have an LOI up to 10%. Often Ca rather than CaO content is quoted.
It is a light powder, bulk density is about 20 lbs/cubic foot.
There are normally ppm amounts of heavy metals, arsenic, fluoride.
Properties
Glaze Opacifier - Opacity
Tricalcium phosphate has been used as an opacifier (to replace tin oxide) to give similar color, texture, and brilliance in leadless sanitaryware glazes above cone 8. Does not produce opacity at lower temperatures.
