Mineral, of the ideal form Ca2(Fe3+, Al)Al2[OH SiO4 Si2O7] with a typical empirical analysis of CaO 23.04%, Al2O3 20.32%, Fe2O3 17.75%, SiO2 37.04%, H2O 1.85%
Hardness: 6-7 Density: 3.3-3.5 Insoluble in acids
Frequent ingredient of feldspathic rocks in particular and in igneous and metamorphic rocks in general, but by itself is rarely used except as semi-precious stone, due to its hardness and price. However, when used (in powder) in place of quartz interesting transparents glaze sheens result. Similar are augite, amphibole, actinolite, and tourmaline.
