Mineral, of the ideal form Ca₂(Fe₃⁺, Al)Al₂[OH SiO₄ Si₂O₇] with a typical empirical analysis of CaO 23.04%, Al₂O₃ 20.32%, Fe₂O₃ 17.75%, SiO₂ 37.04%, H₂O 1.85%
Hardness: 6-7 Density: 3.3-3.5 Insoluble in acids
Frequent ingredient of feldspathic rocks in particular and in igneous and metamorphic rocks in general, but by itself is rarely used except as semi-precious stone, due to its hardness and price. However, when used (in powder) in place of quartz interesting transparents glaze sheens result. Similar are augite, amphibole, actinolite, and tourmaline.
